LiSa FAQback to support pages

This is a list of some currently known issues/bugs/features, and some tips on how to work around/with them. Please email suggestions to STEIM support. [email addresses]

1. memory / buffer size
when setting the buffer sizes (output-, sample- and processbuffer) the 'Available' seconds should NOT be maxed out - the 'Available' number of seconds is based on the total amount of memory on your computer, which is shared with the OS, LiSa and other applications running - in general, when you only run LiSa, it is safe to stay within 70% of the 'Available' seconds;

2. environments
when changing the layout of the windows, this 'environment' does NOT get saved within the setup unless you select 'Replace current environment';

3. saving setup changes
some changes in a LiSa setup (for example changes in preferences, environments, samples in sample library) are not marked by LiSa as such, meaning that if you only make such changes, LiSa will not always ask 'do you want to save' when quitting - the key here is to check the Preset number in the assignment window; if this number is bold, LiSa marked the setup as 'changed' - so if you make such specific changes as mentioned, just change something else (for example drag a zone onto a key and remove it again) that make the preset number bold;

4. opening LiSa setups by double-clicking them
there are known issues with this: the computer will try to start Classic to run LiSa 2.5 for OS 9, or you will get a message that the file is too old (?!), or the wrong version of LiSa will be used - you can associate all LiSa setups with the right LiSa version by getting info (apple-i) on a setup, changing the 'open with' section and hit 'Change all' - in general though it is much safer to just start LiSa separately, and use 'File open' to open a setup;

5. removing controllers, zones or samples from libraries
you should be careful removing controllers from the controller library, zones from the zone library or samples from the sample library; when removing controllers, the controller assignments in the assignment window might get shuffled, so that the mapping is off; when removing zones, zone assignments in the assignment window might disappear; when removing samples from the sample library, problems might arise when using loading zones or samples connected to presets (they also get shuffled, so different zones get loaded with the loading zones or the presets);

6. sample format
when you want to add samples to the sample library, the format of these files sould be aiff or sd2, 44.1000Hz and 16bit - also, in OS 9 the OS would mark files with certain headers, called resource fork, and LiSa still expects these headers (she won't load them without) while they are not necessary anymore in OS X - so when transferring samples from another flatform to OS X, you'll have to open the files in another audio editor, and save them under a different name - then the necessary headers will be added; addition: sometimes samples created by LiSa have the wrong header info!

7. output buffer
the output buffer only records group A output - so when using the output buffer to capture a LiSa session, make sure the zones output to group A; an alternative is using WireTap, a freeware program; the disadvantage there is that it only records audio played back through the internal audio device;

8. zones on multiple voice layers
when using different zones on different voicelayers, the assigned controllers on one voicelayer do not affect the zones on another voicelayer, except when using one zone on two or more different voicelayers; in that case controllers assigned on the different voicelayers will affect the zone in all voicelayers;

9. global lisa settings
when assigning controllers to different parameter in the global lisa settings, you cannot scroll through the controllers; also the boxes do not show the value just entered; just enter the right number, hit save settings, and if you open it again, it'll show the right values;

10. LiSa volume
the lisa volume controller setting in the global lisa settings does not work anymore;

11. track midi controls
the 'track midi controls' option in the options menu does not always reflect the true state of that parameter;

12. stuck mouse in pattern editor
when changing parameters in the pattern editor through scrolling, it might occur that the mouse pointer disappears; to get it back, hit apple-option-esc (as if you wanted to force-quit lisa), but don't force-quit, just close the popup window;

13. pattern controllers
when choosing 'midi controllable parameters' in the pattern editor, always manually enter the element of which you want to control a parameter, even if the desired element is already showing up - otherwise LiSa doesn't 'remember' the element and will crash as soon as you test it;

14. envelopes
when using an envelope with a non-zero release for a zone in once or trigger mode, you will hear a strange buzz at the end of the zone. this is LiSa trying to perform a release on a very short piece of sound. to get a more realistic release, you can set the playback mode of that zone to 'spiral algorithm' with the spiralness set to 64 (no effect); then LiSa will go past the end of the zone to perform the release. you can also set the playback mode to 'back and forth' to use back-an-forth looping for the release.

15. LiSa on Intel Macs
when running LiSa on an Intel Mac using the internal audio, take care of the following:
  • goto the AudioMidi setup (in Applications/Utilities/) and specify 16bit, 44.1kHz for the input and output;
  • in LiSa's global menu, audio settings, select a sample vector size of at least 128;
other settings will cause LiSa to crash.
