STEIM Project applications
STEIM provides support on the following fields:
> Residency projects Projects that are more clearly developed and matured (typically after an introductory seminar) can be (a combination of) one of the following:
> STEIM Instrument Lab Beginning in August, STEIM will unveil a new seminar and collaborative residency program dealing with the building of new instruments and the artistic practices which emerge from interactive, performance-based thinking. The program will serve as a crash-course in STEIM philosophy, interaction principles, and practical considerations for the live and virtuosic performance of electronic music. Participants will engage with STEIM staff and with each other through hands-on workshops, staff-led discussions, and group mentoring sessions encouraging new perspectives on your artistic practice. This week-long program will also serve as an ideal first visit to STEIM, an opportunity to discuss potential future collaborations, and a chance to become a part of the international network of artists and musicians that pass through STEIM and the Netherlands.
Discounts are available for groups. Scholarships may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, we are able to offer a limited number of accommodations to resident artists at a heavily discounted rate. These accommodations are available at the STEIM guesthouse, right around the block from the studios and workshop spaces. Please let us know in advance if you'd like to reserve a spot in our guesthouse. For dates of upcoming Instrument Labs please go to the workshops page. In your application you should specify what dates you prefer. Note that we usually schedule the Instrument Labs steered by timing preferences indicated by applicants. So if there's no Instrument Lab scheduled yet in the period of your preference, this doesn't mean we cannot plan one. > Studio Rentals STEIM provides independent rental of our studio facilities. We have three studio spaces: Studio 1 - Large, sound-proof studio with adjustable acoustic treatment suitable for medium sized ensembles. €70 per three (3) hours Studio 2 - Small, sound-proofed and acoustically treated control room connected to Studio 1. Suitable for small ensembles, mixing, and mastering. €70 per three (3) hours Studio 3 - Large non-treated space suitable for practice and performance. €50 per three (3) hours Studio 1 and 2 may be rented together for €100 per three hours. > Internships STEIM has possibilities for workplacements, although limited. The area of the workplacement can be hardware (development of sensor devices), software (development of STEIM software - especially C/C++ programmers) or artistic (assisting in STEIM projects - although there are very little opportunities for this). The budget for internships is very limited. > Advice & feedback It is always possible to get advice or feedback from STEIM on projects that are related to general STEIM activities and technology. Please apply according to the application procedure below. > Artist guesthouse STEIM runs a small artist guesthouse as part of its facilities. The guesthouse is in the same building complex as the studios and R&D labs, and is occupied by fellow artists and researchers. The scheduling of the rooms is managed by STEIM's facility manager, who can be contacted for information and reservation at nico[at]steim[dot]nl. We currently face a policy of funding cuts for the arts by the Dutch government. As a result, STEIM is now formally obliged to gain extra income in order to cover a sizeable portion of our annual operating costs. To help meet this quota we've begun charging for accomodation in the guest house. Our fees are very cheap by Amsterdam standards, and make it possible for STEIM to continue supporting the electronic music community through our program of workshops, concerts, and artist residencies. The guesthouse has three guest rooms and two individual apartments. All the spaces are clean, basic and simply furnished. All guest rooms share one kitchen, shower and toilet, which are on the same floor as the common living area. The individual apartments have their own kitchen, shower and toilet. STEIM's guesthouse is a self catering accommodation. Meaning it is not a hotel and each guest must keep their own room, the kitchen and other common living areas tidy and clean during their stay. Since there is no official reception for the guesthouse you must arrange your time of arrival in advance by e-mail to ensure we will be available to welcome you and check you in upon arrival. While booking your tickets and planning your time of arrival please take into account that STEIM's office is opened from Monday to Thursday during office hours. How to make a reservation: Booking a room at the guesthouse is arranged by sending an email to the above mentioned email address. Please contact us to enquire about availability of rooms and studios during your confirmed residency.
