HPL#17 will feature a special concert by circuit bend master Juan Matos Capote and wild electro-maestro Blipvert. Capote will be wrapping up his 2 day workshop by playing together with his students on newly bent instruments. Blipvert will be undergoing an artistic residency to refine his live setup through our on-going collaboration with Dutch music label Eat Concrete. It will be a rare occasion to see these acts up close and it's FREE!

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES:

Juan Matos Capote is an experimental audiovisual artist from the Canary Islands. Since 2008 he lives in Barcelona (Spain) where he moved to after living for thirteen years in New York City. He studied Circuit Bending with pioneer, and father of Circuit Bending, Reed Ghazala in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and techniques of Deep Listening with composer and musician Pauline Oliveros in New York and Barcelona. He has taught several Circuit Bending workshops in USA. In Catalonia he has given workshops at the Escola Superior de Disseny (ESDI) in Sabadell, in Hangar (Barcelona), in Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), in Miscelanea (Barcelona), in Estudio Circuit Torçat (Barcelona), etc., and he has lectured on the subject at various festivals and events such as the EWeek Vic (Vic) and Gargall Festival (Manresa).

In his performances, Matos Capote makes use of analogue equipment, circuit-bent toys, effect pedals and radios, self-built oscillators and occasionally, field recordings that he plays back on modified walkmans. Many of his circuits are characterized by random, yet controllable, behaviors.

Will Redmond (aka BlipVert) has been an active composer and instrumentalist for ten years.  He has played concerts with Eyvind Kang, Graham Haynes, the Ruins, Elliott Sharp, Blaise Siwula, Ron Anderson, Fennesz, Funckarma, Ceephax Acid Crew, Alec Empire, Gerri Jaeger and Raphael Vanoli (Knalpot), Richard Devine, John Savage, Robert Dick, and Barbara Morrison. Collaborations include  work with Elliott Sharp, Phillip Johnston and his Captain Beefheart tribute project, Ron Anderson's PAK, Time of Orchids, Mambo Mantis, and Scott Rosenberg's Golden Bolts of Tone. Will's compositions have been featured at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, New York University, and numerous international festivals and venues. Work has been supported by the Vilar Global Fellows, the Portland Flute Society, the STEIM research center, and the NYU New Music Ensemble. He has two Masters degrees in teaching and music composition. He is released on Eat Concrete, DTrash Records, RA Sounds, EMF Media, Sachimay Interventions, and Trixy records and is distributed internationally.

Currently, Will's main project is his own brand of solo electronic music composition, BlipVert (read all about BlipVert on the BlipVert info page). Will's newest endeavor is the BlipBand, a quartet that he fronts with electric kalimba, percussion, and ghaita featuring structured compositions that focus on complex rhythmic passages and additional ethnic instrumentation (comparisons may include Konono N1, The Master Musicians of Jajouka, and Captain Beefheart). He looks forward to blowing people's heads open with all kinds of sound for a long time to come.
