Trasformatorio is about settling and developing an annual laboratory for performative arts in a remote community in Sicily: Montelbano Elicona (province Messina). This laboratory focuses on the development of contemporary site-specific performances informed by the human and geographical landscape as well as implementations of a philosophy of near-to-zero- environmental impact.
A group of international artists, from various disciplines is invited and selected to participate in workshops and initiate projects within the community and its surrounding landscape. We challenge ourselves to go ‘back’ to the basic questions of performative arts in this specific place: ‘what can we be aware of here and transform into a vital work; a work that shares/communicates a pure reflection on what is present for us here?’. We also challenge us in designing tools that are appropriate for these spaces; to scavenge for useful practices and update them to our XXI century sensibility.
The topic of sustainability, both energetic, economic, of the natural landscape and of cultural life, follows directly and organically on these basic questions. Awareness of the place and local culture is artistic starting point. Self-growing cultural processes follows with their design constrains. The ‘transformations’ that we seek, are meant to enrich the cultural exchange of both the local people and the visiting artists. Artistically ‘reading‘ a place means in our project: taking care of the place. Therefore we explicitly connect research of sustainability in site-specific performative arts to the artistic research.
T#1, is the second edition of Trasformatorio and will take place from 20 April to 4 May in Sicily, in the remote town of Montalbano Elicona, on the mountains.
In the afternoon program Federico Bonelli will set up the representation of Montalbano’s T#1 ‘game space’ for makers, artists and players. He will provoke them with questions, strategies, constraints and other ways introduce them to a lateral way of thinking. Creative solution processes will come to pass that might lead to create experimental setups for research.
The lecture will be traversal in content and rich of examples and dramaturgical cases. Discussion will follow.
Keep an eye on this page to see if more lectures or presentations are added to the program!
