Hello World, meet RoSa!
STEIM invites you to a new launch event where we announce our next generation software for live sampling: RoSa, short for Real-time OSC controlled Sampling. Goodbye LiSa, hello RoSa!
RoSa is based on the awesome sounding engine of LiSa, which it replaces and builds upon, but it is much more flexible and versatile. It’s a small application, but it features a client-server architecture so it enables a multitude of scenarios. RoSa itself is the server—it can be configured and controlled by sending OSC messages, which means it can be used in many kinds of configurations. Any source can send it OSC data. Clients like Lemur, junXion, Max, or PD will be responsible for live control and for RoSa’s user interface.
RoSa will be available in November 2013 for Mac OS 10.6 (or higher), but the goal is to have RoSa running on singleboard computers such as the Raspberry Pi and the Beagleboard, allowing us to create a dedicated hardware live sampling machine! We are working on this, and we’ll keep you posted.
You and RoSa
RoSa‘s engine will be free of charge, but we will sell client applications and apps in our webshop for small amounts of money. If you’re geek enough to do some coding, it won’t cost you anything. And if you’re good enough to make something other people might want to pay for, you can sell your client solutions in our shop and make some money yourself. We hope that there will be a wide range of RoSa clients available in the near future, from general purpose editors to setups for very specific uses.
Initially, we will have two GUI’s available for RoSa, one created with Lemur on the iPad and one created in Max/MSP.
Check it out!
We will launch RoSa on October 31, 20:30 at STEIM. Frank Baldé, STEIM’s software designer, will present and demonstrate ROSA’s engine as well as several GUI’s that can be used to set it up. After his introduction, composer/performer Jos Zwanenburg will perform a piece that he created together with Frank. Jos has been intimately involved in RoSa’s creation.
Date: October 31, 2013
Time: 20:30 (Doors open 20:00)
Location: STEIM, Achtergracht 19, 1017WL Amsterdam
But this is only the beginning. In december, STEIM will organize a ROSA jamboree where we will invite RoSa users to give us feedback, show their GUI’s, etc. That event will also feature a RoSa GUI creation workshop and a RoSa performance workshop.
