SUMMARY:Concert: Phillip Stearns\, TokTek vs MNK\, Jon Reus
DESCRIPTION;ALTREP="http://steim.org/event/hack-queensday-concert/":SATURDA
Y MAY 5: CONCERT WITH PHILLIP STEARNS\, TOKTEK VS MNK\, JON REUS\n\nNew Yor
k based artist Phillip Stearns first came to STEIM 5 years ago as part of t
he CalArts Exchange\, and impressed us with his mad soldering skills and ti
reless effort to build his analog neural-network sculpture AANN. 3 years la
ter\, he returned as a member of the MLB project and blew us away with his
bio-feedback strobic analog synth performance. In the meantime\, he has bec
ome a prolific media artist creating a body of work ranging from installati
ons\, video\, performance\, and textiles. We are excited to see what he bri
ngs us this time.\nSupporting the night is a duo by our favorite live-sampl
ing beat pilot Tok Tek and glitch-VJ MNK (check out their performance here)
\, and STEIM’s own Jon Reus premiering his new piece that dissects vintage
 digital hardware.\nDon’t miss it!\nARTIST BIOGRAPHIES ——————–\nPhillip Stea
rns creates at the intersection of art\, philosophy\, and science\, drawing
upon a variety of disciplines including sound installation\, music perform
 ance and composition\, video\, circuit sculpture\, photography\, and concep
tual art. Deconstruction\, dissection\, and reconfiguration are methods he
commonly employs in his hands-on approach to creating works with materials
 ranging from electronic objects\, biological systems\, images\, light\, vid
eo\, and sound. His work has been exhibited internationally at electronics
arts festivals\, museums\, and galleries including: Harvestworks (2010 NYC)
 \; Gli.tc/H (2010 Chicago\, IL)\; Festival De Arte Digital (2010 Belo Horiz
 onte\, Brazil)\; FILE (2009 Sao Paulo\, Brazil)\; NIME (2009 Pittsburgh\, P
 A)\; Filmer La Musique (2009 Paris\, France)\; FONLAD (2009 Coimbra\, Portu
 gal)\; Torrance Art Museum (2008\, 2007 Los Angeles\, CA)\; Optica Film Fes
tival (2011\, 2008 Spain). He has participated in residencies at Museums Qu
artier (Vienna 2010)\, STEIM (Amsterdam 2007)\, Experimental Television Cen
ter (NY 2009)\, Harvestworks (NY 2010)\, is the current AIRTime Fellow at F
ree103Point9 for the 2010-2011 cycle\, and curator for the 8th annual Bent
Festival (2011).\nhttp://phillipstearns.wordpress.com/\nToktek vs MNK is li
ve audiovisual improvisation by Tom Verbruggen (Toktek) and Karl Klomp (vj
mnk). Their research deals with illogic audio / video hardware (circuit ben
ding) in combination with max / atmel / Lisa programming and interfacing. V
isual artist / musician Tom Verbruggen structures unbridled clicks and cuts
of his circuit bent gadgets and melodramatic tunes into a fragile disturba
nce. Sampling with a joystick Tom creates unlogic contrasts that will feed
the video hardware of Karl Klomp. Modified secondhand (obsolete) hardware i
s tuned to create and interfere video on a fragile but aggresive way. With
minimal animations and live generate ‘OSD glitch’ the signal gets carefully
disturbed into a hyper dynamic oasis of disorder\, all preformed very live
.\nJonathan Reus is a Dutch/American artist working with sound\, electronic
s and computing technologies. Drawing on influences from noise\, minimalist
techno\, and glitch\, he conducts live improvised experiments deconstructi
ng the relationships we share with our ecosystems of machines and informati
 on. http://www.jonathanreus.com\nDate: 5 May\, 2012\nTime: 20:00 (doors ope
 n)\nCost: €5\nLocation: STEIM Studio 3\, Utrechtsedwarsstraat 134\, Amsterd
