Affording Difference

Different Bodies / Cultures / Expression / Abilities

This research project concerns applications of interactive technology with persons of other abilities. Using motion tracking technology (including video-based and controller-based systems), dance and music, the research will focus on the emergence of indeterminacy, creativity and awareness of diversity. How can we remove barriers to expression, joy and inclusion? How can we expand gestural expression, range of movement, and emotional expression? How can we promote a positive awareness of difference, away from normative expressions?

We will demonstrate some of the technology and methods we will be using, as well as discuss data collection, issues of instruction vs. improvisation, and other important issues.

Working together to create electronic music instruments to improve quality of life

Over the past three years STEIM has collaborated with the Vanboeijen Institute in Assen, a careinstitution for the mentally disabled, to create musical instruments to improve the quality of life of the clients of Vanboeijen: to have fun, regulate tension, have control over their own environment, and support physical movement. This evening we will present the first version of the instrument that has been developed, and discuss the challenges that we faced over the course of the design process.

This project is supported by Stichting Doen.

This evening is part of the INTERNATIONAL METABODY FORUM – IMF 2014 – AMSTERDAM and is co-financed by the European Commission – EU Culture program 2013-2018
