STEIM started their new event series ‘Connector’ last month. Every first Thursday of the month we will connect with another collective or disciplin, resulting in either a concert or exhibition. For this second edition we invited Luca De Rosso with an amazing A/V performance. From the STEIM connection we have our Master student Michele Abolaffio and Sybren Danz. This time we are also connecting with our neighbor de Appel, they are extending their opening hours so Connector visitors can visit their exhibition.

Luca De Rosso
Luca De Rosso is an interaction designer who’s spent the past years working for New York based tech startups focussed on data analytics and the art world.
His work is characterized by a human, sound, image triad. It explores possible interactions between analogical and digital, as a means to achieve a result with a strong technological component and artificial qualities, yet preserving or reintroducing some organic ones.
One of his projects, OTOH, a controller for real time manual beat slicing of audio samples, received the mention of honor from the Lucky Strike Designer Award by the Raymond Loewy Foundation.
When he’s not hammering on a keyboard, Luca dips his hands in bread dough, improving his baking skills.
Michele Abolaffio is a live electronics performer, sound engineer and interface developer.
He holds a BA degree in Music and New Technologies from the Conservatory of Firenze “L. Cherubini” and a Master of Music degree in “Instruments & Interfaces” at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague, in collaboration with the STEIM Institute in Amsterdam.
His artistic and technological research focuses on the development of biophysical musical instruments for live performance.
He collaborated as live electronics performer with the Music School of Fiesole. He develops interactive sound installations integrated into sculptures together with an artists collective. As musician, he joined various projects related to modern electronic and rock music. He is a freelance live sound engineer.
In 2016 he won the ADE SoundLab grant for the live performance Synaesthesia.
From 2017 he is the sound engineer and production assistant for the Ephémère series of Studio LOOS in Den Haag.
Sybren Danz (NL) has been involved with music and sound for over two decades and became a member of the STEIM team in 2011. He is STEIM’s hardware developer, specialized in analog circuitry. STEIM’s famous Black Box modular synthesis system, built in the seventies and restored by Sybren, will be shown and demonstrated.
Come on over at De Appel during Connector! De Appel is opening their doors especially for Connector guests. Currently on view is one of the five artistic interventions of ‘BUSY DAYS with Christine Sun Kim’. The American artist Christine Sun Kim explores the medium of sound through technology, performance and drawing. This understanding has been determined by her being Deaf since birth. The drawing series Available Spaces for Composers (2016) and Just Music (2017), which are now on view at the hallway to De Appel offices, develop notations informed by many years of working within sign language interpreters’ sonic parameters and reading captions on television and movies.
