Shackle
Shackle is Anne LaBerge on flute and samples and Robert van Heumen on laptop. Their aim is to explicity and subtly exploit shackling in both concept and material.

Working with a computerized communicationsystem that proposes various compositional elements to each player, they can then choose to whether or not to cooperate with the proposed material. Proposals also involve aspects of restriction, either in soundmaterial, timing, dynamics or other musical parameters. Musical sections are visually presented to the audience by video snippets occuring regularly or irregularly throughout the performance.

‘Shackle was a perfect, ‘nordic’ musical contrast. The duo mixed Anne LaBerge’s delicately chosen, beautifully restraint articulations and timbres from across the flute family gamut, with Robert van Heumen’s live processing and interspersing of his trademark, hard edge, and quite unique brand of sample scratching. While i find the latter technique at times somewhat angular, it contrasted here extremely well with the mysterious shimmering quality of much of the music the duo knew to invent. Anne’s striking pose and Robert’s introvert concentration didn’t disguise the fact that they were constantly listening and finely tuned to one another.’
Daniel Schorno - review of the concert at STEIM’s Micro Jamboree Dec 14 2006

Paul Hubweber + dj sniff
Trombonist Paul Hubweber and turntablist dj sniff will perform together for the first time following several sessions in the STEIM studios. They come together after seeing each other play on numerous occasions and admiring the sharp focus that each instrumentalist brings to stage.

Paul Hubweber
Paul Hubweber began with trombone studies in 1971 mainly concentrating on improvised music.
The title of one of his solo production “Luerix and Paranoise” describes the essential characteristics of Hubweber`s uniquel “trombone voice” and his musical focus: The special affinity for the balladic and the noisy, and the inseparable combination of tone and sound belonging to the same origin.
He has continuous cooperation with Claus van Bebber, Martin Theurer, Erhard Hirt, Ulrich Phillipp, Hainer Woermann, Paul Lovens, John Butcher, Markus Eichenberger, Peter Kowald, Wolfgang Schliemann and Dirk Marwedel.
He has appeared in International concert tours and festivals, e. g. FreeMusicAntwerpen, Moers, HumaNoiseCongress, MusiktriennaleKoeln, DerGuteTon, Symposium Contemporary Music, Forum 20 DDF, MusicaNovaBremen, Dance + Music Dresden, Documenta VIII, Ars Electronica, and is also the Co-founder of AIM..

dj sniff
dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) believes in the instrumental autonomy of the turntable and the musicianship of the DJ. He is a turntable musician working in the field of improvised and experimental music. His music focuses on the live reconstruction and narratization of the phonographically amplified - the music, the sound, the technology and the past. To achieve this, he uses a unique setup consisting of hand-made hardware interfaces and a custom Max/MSP software along with one turntable and DJ mixer. He is also a concert/event curator for electronic music and a researcher of music technology. Since 2005 he has been involved with STEIM`s (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, Amsterdam) R&D lab and is currently its Artistic Co-Director. dj sniff regularly performs with computer musician Yutaka Makino as Audile and with saxophonist Keir Neuringer.
