SATELLITES, FAR AWAY BUT CLOSE BY

Original annoucement:

Marie Christine van der Sman, director of the Museon, is pleased to invite you to the opening of the new theme gallery

at 5pm on Thursday 23 February 2012 in the Museon's Levi Lassen Auditorium.

The exhibition will be opened by Jozias van Aartsen, Mayor of The Hague.

The permanent theme gallery uses interactive presentations to show visitors not only how satellites are constructed and operated but also how they impact on our everyday lives. It is bang up to date, including a guided tour of the International Space Station given by Dutch astronaut André Kuipers, who has been working there since last December.

On Saturday 25 February at 2pm the exhibition will continue with the live performance of OPTICKS, a project by Daniela de Paulis in collaboration with Jan van Muijlwijk and the CAMRAS radio amateurs association at Dwingeloo radio telescope. OPTICKS is a live performance between the Earth and the Moon, during which digital images are sent to the Moon in form of radio signals from a dish situated in Brazil or the UK and received back by Dwingeloo radio telescope in The Netherlands. The ‘moonbounced’ images are projected in real time during the performance. More information on www.opticks.info
