Although mainstream entertainment has become one of Korea's largest exports, it's underground music scene keeps a low profile to the western world. However, a handful of dedicated artists have developed a highly personal instrumental practice that is utterly unique in the global landscape of experimental sound. Three musicians central to this scene will be in residence at STEIM to record and will perform a concert at OT301 as part of their extensive European tour supported by the LIG Arts Foundation in Korea.

Location: OT301, Overtoom 301, Amsterdam

Ryu Hankil was born in 1975 in Seoul, South Korea. Hankil was a keyboard player in two famous Korean indie pop groups, but eventually left the groups because he was tired of typical music making and sounds. Then he started his own solo electro pop project, Daytripper and he was mentioned first generation of Korean Electronica. Released two solo albums as Daytripper.
He is interested in finding another musical structure depending on abandoned objects likes clockworks, typewriters, telephones and their vibrations.
Hankil has organized a monthly event called RELAY since 2005. He established his own publishing office called Manual also, and releases improvised music and magazines. He is a member of Otomo Yoshihide’s new project ‘FEN (Far East Network)’.
Choi Joonyong founded Astronoise with Hong Chulki in 1996 and has been playing noise and improvisation music. He produces sounds with CD player, reel tape player, loud-speaker, MP3 player using their malfunction or feedback. He performed with many artists and released many albums including three solo albums of CD player playing. He is also in a harsh noise band called ‘Master Musik’ with 6 musicians. He runs a label ‘Balloon & Needle’ introducing experimental music from Korea, and co-curates a concert series called ‘Sound of Confusion’ with Hong Chulki.
Hong Chulki is a noise/improvised musician from South Korea.
He has been a part of the first noise live act of Seoul named Astronoise (w/ Choi Joonyong) since 1997. He was also a co-founder and regular participant of the free improvisation meeting in Seoul, RELAY (directed by Ryu Hankil) from 2005-2008. He has composed for the several Korean independent and experimental films (by Kim Gok/Kim Sun and by Lee Hangjun) as well. He is currently co-running an independent recording label, Balloon and Needle with Choi. He is also independently carrying out theoretical and ontological investigation on noise and non-idiomatic improvisation. His list of collaborated artists includes Choi Joonyong, Joe Foster, Jason Kahn, Zbigniew Karkowski, Takahiro Kawaguchi, Lee Hangjun, Sachiko M, Otomo Yoshihide and Ryu Hankil.
